Mitchell Farm Paint Out

September 24, 2017, 9:00am

Mitchell Equine Retirement Farm 300 East Haddam Road (Rte. 82), Salem CT "This event is located at a scenic horse farm, with the laudable mission of providing a beautiful home for horses that have outlived their original purpose but still deserve to be respected in their old age. The farm has beautiful buildings, stables, ponds with lily pads, and fenced fields filled with these old friends living a well-deserved life. Join us. Remember, you don’t have to be a member to paint at a CPAPS paint out. We welcome all artists, as painting outdoors is a rewarding skill building discipline, made much more enjoyable by the interaction with other painters who, like you, are inspired by our beautiful landscape." Hello everyone, I'm hoping for some advice. Does anyone here use the Heilman Backpack pastel box for plein aire painting? What has your experience been? It seems most of the pictures I see of people using it, they have to hold the board with their other hand while painting to keep it still. Is the overall design worth the wobble? ... ART EVENT in WINSTED, Connecticut!

Winsted Trails, a NWCT YMCA-sponsored organization, is currently seeking Artists for Winsted's Fall Foliage Festival to be held on Saturday, October 7th, 2017.

We are seeking a dozen or so artists who would be willing to come and create images on paper or canvas Plein Air of the sights and scenery found on The City Walk.

Artwork will be auctioned off at a fundraising event to be held in 2018 to help us defray the unfunded costs of bringing the Still River Greenway (The Sue Grossman Trail) to Downtown Winsted. Artists will receive 50% of their work’s auction price. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so you'll be able to claim Winsted Trails’ 50% as a tax deductible donation!

Submission Guidelines:
- 1 submission per artist
- Media can include oils, acrylics, watercolor, pencil, pastels
- Submissions must feature scenes from The City Walk
- Artists must be present and working during the Festival hours of 10am and 3pm
- Artwork must be submitted to Winsted Trails by January 2, 2018

Registration is simple: commit, through an e-mail to attend the Fall Foliage Festival on Saturday October 7th and paint/draw/sketch a scene from The City Walk between the hrs of 10 am -3 pm. In case of rain on the 7th, we are asking the artists to create at their leisure/convenience, as long as the finished artwork is submitted by January 2nd, 2018.

Art will be auctioned off at a fund raising event, the date of which is to be determined this month at our next meeting on September 28th . ( likely to be in late January, or possibly in March) With the artist receiving (up to) 50% of the proceeds (several artists have already committed 100% of the proceeds towards Winsted Trails fundraising goal )

The audience for the fundraiser will be pulled from our 750 person membership list, as well as the surrounding communities, plus guests recruited by the artists, and will be advertised in CT, MA, and NY newspapers, as well as through Facebook promotions.

Winsted has a rapidly growing art community with the artists at Whiting Mills on the east end of town, Mad River Lofts directly in the center of town and the soon to be completed Winsted Edge Works on the west end, as well as several "pop-up galleries" and outdoor exhibitions. We also expect the American Mural Project, with it's expected completion in 2018 to provide a great boost to our art community. We at Winsted Trails feel it is very important to encourage this growth and intend for our Art Exposition and Auction to help do so.

Promotion of their art to a new audience, the potential for up to 50% of the auction proceeds, and that great sensation one gets when doing a good deed, are just some of the benefits we offer to our prospective artists.

Salmon River State Forest Paint Out

September 10, 2017, 8:30am

www.cpaps.org/paintouts/ "The next CPAPS paint out will be at Salmon River State Forest in East Hampton. The entrance is at the intersection of Rte 16 and Comstock Bridge Road, with an address of 11 Bridge Street, East Hampton. I scouted the site Monday and found it to be simply beautiful. The Comstock Covered bridge is massive and beautiful, with two windows looking over the river in each direction. Because of the views from the cover of the bridge and underneath, I’m pretty sure that there would be painting opportunities even if it was raining. Bathroom facilities are located at the Salmon River Park site nearby. I’ll have directions at the sign-in table. The trail going upstream from the covered bridge is hard packed, wide, and almost level, giving access to many river views upstream, with plenty of flat rocks in the river, and mossy banks lined with Joe Pye Weed and Cardinal Flower. This is a wonderful wide, shallow river at this location, showing reflected sky and the very beginnings of fall color. I hope to see you there." Paint Out Chair, Shauna Shane

Checks here PLANS of CPAPS for coming few months!
President's Letter from Dawn Tyler:

"Hello Painters,

It’s hard to believe Labor Day weekend has come and gone, and we have just 4 more paint outs scheduled for this year. Hopefully, there will be some wonderful fall colors for us to capture on canvas during September and October. Our remaining 4 paint outs are:
▪ September 10 – Salmon River State Park in Colchester
▪ September 24 – Mitchell Farm in Salem
▪ October 8 – Auer Farm in Bloomfield
▪ October 22 – Hammonasset State Park in Madison

It’s too bad our paint out in Southington wasn’t more successful. Mother Nature wasn’t very cooperative – it rained on and off most of the day, but we did have 4 brave artists painting at the Barnes Museum.

It’s time to begin thinking about your most successful plein air work for submission into the juried members show. Our show is up in On-Line Juried Shows and you can begin submitting your work whenever you’re ready. The submission deadline is November 5th. Your 2017 dues must be paid for you to be eligible to enter the show, so if you haven’t paid your dues, please do so. You may pay your dues when you enter the show.

Our show will be in the Southington Community Cultural Arts building. Receiving days will be Thursday, November 30th and Saturday, December 2nd. You may want to try to deliver your work on Thursday because Friday, December 1st is White Christmas in the Community - a big event in the center of Southington. We will try to hang all work received on Thursday so that it will be on display for the event. Another thing for you to consider – SoCCA has a gift shop, so if you make note cards, calendars, etc., you may want to bring them with you for consideration as a gift shop item. SoCCA gets a 40% commission on gift shop sales. If anyone would like to help out with the show (receiving, hanging, pickup), please let me know.

This year our judge is Mark Boedges. In case you missed it, he was a featured artist in the August issue of Southwest Art. Mark will be doing a demo for us on December 9th.

I wish all of you lots of luck with getting your pieces accepted into the members show. Enjoy the rest of the plein air painting season."
